Xbox x360key 2012 Match-ups and Matches Examine

The x360Key can be a new product from the renowned Wiikey Team. Well-known for one of the most well-liked line of Wii modchips, they dominated the marketplace proper up until a device referred to as the WODE came out. The WODE has been an extremly productive item becuase its bassically a hardware hack that allows you to run games from a harddrive, insteaed of one's original disc. Instead of the Wiikey team bringing out the identical item, they've been concentrating for more than a year on doing the precise exact same factor for the xbox 360, and here it really is!

The hardware with the xK3y optical disc drive emulator for the Xbox 360 is currently unmachted. I have rarely had such nicely manufactured hardware laying aound here, a buddy of mine, who had a look at the xK3y, talked about well-engineered alien technology, properly, he does not know it any better, but the hardware which consists of the NXP3143 ARM9 CPU, 32MB Winbond RAM (Winbond) and Lattice FPGA Chip could definitely come from outer space. All components, including the slots and also the MicroSD card slot (for the included 128 MB SD card) are outstandingly well attached towards the nicely manufactured mainboard (xK3y). The display (xK3y remote) and the buttons, the USB port for the USB drives as well as the MicroSD slot are also flawless. As for the hardware, there's nothing to complain about.
Merely the external case for the xK3y remote can be a matter of taste, I'm no fan of the shiny piano black surface, but as I stated, it is a matter of taste.

The x360key is based of Linux, just like the WODE was. This indicates that it really is compatible with numerous filesystems, but a lot more importantly, is that the feature list can grow and grow and grow. Initially the device will only be made to perform using the "PHAT" xboxs as well as the 9504 and 0225 slim xboxs. There are more Slim xbox kinds to come inside the future, so please appear in the compatiblity table below to check if it is going to perform on your box.

The x360key team have carried out everything they are able to to make this device prepared to install. Its a solderless installation! The issue with xbox 360 drives is that they are locked towards the console they are in by way of a serial number. This indicates which you can't just swap DVD drives more than with out first obtaining the important out the original drive, and putting it in the replacemetn drive. So you may must input for important into the x360key for it to effectively emulate the drive. Now this would normally be a issue for many folks, as pricey flashing tools are necessary to extract the important from drives, for examble, the maximus lizard is 3 on our site. The great news is that the x360key will be able to extract the crucial out of each compatible drive for you! This indicates that you simply are within the installer and you've the tools to do every thing yourself.

For the Purchasing Info Consider: x360key or xk3y

How do you know that?

Bob: My car doesn't have a speedometer. Rob: Then how do you know how fast you're going? Bob: Well, when I'm driving at 15 miles an hour, the fenders rattle; at 25 miles an hour, the windows rattle; and at 30, the motor starts knocking-and that's as fast as it'll go.

Todd Howard Discusses Behavior Tracking in Skryim

Investigating the gaming gadget M3i Zero for DS which home brew enthusiasts tend to be dying for

Device Arrival

This extremely looked forward to M3i Zero has recently landed. A card which have been gely|greatly|very|massively|widely|really|extremely|highly|enormously} anticipated amongst the homebrew scene simply because of its feature set. And not only is the gear full upgradeable via the kernel, boot flash and firmware, but also the Operating-system works with the very much trumpeted M3 Sakura. At one time only available for the Japanese. At this time interpreted for the european union market place.

Previous Dec . when I was analyzing the M3 Real, I made a comment over the power of the hacked multiply loader Os. Which offered the end user several choices, adequate to accommodate the different desires of any Nintendo ds home brew enthusiast. I am thrilled to find out those comments have been taken on board by Power team M3. The M3i stands out as the 1st available store card that works with a Twin Boot system as standard. You might change between TouchPod and Sakura simply by pressing down the A button at boot.

However, enough with the blarney. Let's wait and watch what is underneath the hood of the completely new M3i Zero.

So what's Included in the Packaging.

Gadget M3i Zero arrives in a shiny darker blue retail package printed with the M3 brand name and web address. The back of the package describes the feature set of the card and even includes a graphic portrayal of the items in the box. The packaging dimension, form and over-all finish, is precisely like the prior M3 Real.

The contents of the package are inside a normal clear plastic tray. They are as follows: The M3i Zero card, which is stored inside a plastic case with space for a Micro sd card. This is extremely similar to the cases you get with memory cards such as Kingston and Sandisk, a tiny little USB 2.0 reader, emblazoned with a white colored M3 emblem. Having said that the USB reader only shares the physical aspect of the Sandisk reader and not the build quality. Its functional, however I surely usually propose buying a decent "top quality" reader in order to steer clear of the dastardly blight, often called data corruption.

The very last item in the package is the valuable firmware power supply cable. It's an unique piece of kit. Nothing like the Supercard DSONEi option. The M3 staff currently have gone for a totally different form aspect in regards to powering the flash card thru USB. As opposed to the whole entire card sitting in a slot 1 adapter. They have gone for a much more streamlined but still fragile style and design. On one side on the power cord is a rigid ribbon cable, just like the type that connects the Nintendo ds touch screen to the motherboard. This inserts into the side of the M3i Zero card. Powering the device through the flash operation.

Design class.

Tool M3i Zero will come in a black colored casing. The standard of plastic material feels on par with the Acekard 2. It isn't quite on par with the previous M3 Real construction, that felt sturdy and also hefty. Both parts of the shell are kept together by a clip design instead of the common sealed/mini screws. There are a notable IC bulge on the label side of the card. The label is a shiny blue/white design with a yellow/white M3 Zero emblem. The label has been placed directly on the card.

The card's "copper teeth" aren't insulated by the traditional raised fins. Their Pcb is green. The microSD slot is positioned on the side of card. The spring offers a relatively positive action and click. The populated card slot is flush with the top of the casing. Putting the card into my Dsi wasn't any trouble. The IC bulge do not cause any kind of problems by scraping the edges of my well used slot 1.

In general, I believed I was pleased with the overall construction of the card. Its certainly not built like a tank but it is not junk R4 ds revolution clone territory.

Installment.

M3i Zero ships as a blank card. Devoid of any kind of firmware. And here is the blurb coming from the good M3 folks "M3 product don't hold any copyright data or firmware software, however buyers may upgrade the application which will make M3i Zero end up being the most effective flash cart".

It's a quite clever chunk of chicanery by the M3 team. Simply put I assume this can aid the card's transit throughout a few areas over ardent customs inspections.

Therefore to get the monster ready to go, we will need to flash the card's firmware with this enclosed USB power cable. When you're beginning this seemed like a difficult endeavour for anyone as cack handed as me. The rigid ribbon cable end of the power lead appears to be fragile due to the wafer thin design. Yet alas my fears was allayed, as it was pretty simple to put in the power cable into the side of the card. Following the readme instructions, I copied the latest system software to the root of my recently formatted memory card, with the firmware dat file. Then I linked the power cable to my Computer's USB hub. At once a red led began blinking from the M3i Zero's card casing. Soon after 12-20 seconds, the led stopped and I unhooked all the various cable from the card. I hurriedly popped the card into my Nintendo dsi and run the blighter up. Heya Voila! I was greeted by a M3 emblem on the menu screen. Pleasant! A nice smooth installment.

I did the patented start up the card without any Micro SD card test and the old erase a couple of system files test. The M3i Zero surpassed with flying colours, showing the proper error codes for each and every test out.

Conclusions.

Squad M3 looked to have acted on my commentary regarding the M3 Real and presented all of them on the M3i Zero. That they've contributed the outstanding Sakura Graphical user interface onto the western market. Not just that, but additionally had at the same time produced the 1st official double boot system for just about any flash card. This adds to the strength of the product by maintaining superior compatibility although pushing ahead with the Sakura codebase via software up-grades. The power to update the kernel, boot flash and firmware simply boosts the combination. That boosts the endurance of the device.

You see, the M3i Zero has the greatest suite of functionality, in both hardware/software, currently available for any homebrew enthusiast. This card is currently my current firearm of preference for the DSi. This is basically the very best endorsement I could give any DS flash card. page resource: M3i Zero

Is the Nintendo 3DS Black Screen of Death a Major Problem?

The Nintendo 3DS was just recently launched for sale at electronic retailers and although it's received raving reviews from gaming critics, it still has one major issue; the 3DS black Screen of Death. How big of a problem is the 3DS Black Screen of Death.

Thousands of fans flocked to electronic retailers and gamins stores on Sunday March, 27th 2011 to get their hands on the magical Nintendo 3DS and while most gamers rushed home and started enjoying their new gadget, some could only enjoy Nintendo's new toy before running into a major problem that has been dubbed at the 3DS Black Screen of Death.

While playing popular 3DS games like Monkey Ball and Street Fighter, hundreds of 3DS owners have reported black screen crashes with an error instructing them to "Hold down the power Button to turn off the power... and try again" and to contact customer support if the problem persists. When the news of the 3DS Black Screen of death (BSoD) hit the internet - and with a name a scary as Black Screen of "Death" - the BSoD problem has likely been blown out of proportion seeing how the problem only plagued a small portion of those that bought the new 3DS at launch and isn't a widespread problem.

Electronics very rarely launch without a few hiccups here and there and although the 3DS Black Screen of Death isn't as widespread of a problem as the internet would make it seem, it's still a bummer for those that bought the new console in hopes of enjoying their favorite games. Nintendo acknowledged the BSoD problem and have already released a system update that'll easily remedy the problem of the consoles crashing issues.

If you already own a 3DS and fear the BSoD crashes, are waiting to purchase a 3DS until after the problem has rectified, or are already experiencing the problem and having issues with it, you can simply update to the latest software for the 3DS and all of your worries would be washed away. Although the 3DS Black Screen of Death seems like a major issue with Nintendo's console and sounds like something that will kill the person playing it, it's now virtually inexistent now that Nintendo has responded in kind.

Xbox 360 X360Key USB loader application

The X360Key is an Xbox USB loader device and is the 1st on the globe of its kind. It is created by the exact same crew in which brought us your WiiKey chips for the Wii. Considering all the conditions that drive flashing is having these days, We thinks that USB loader tools like the x360key could be the future for anyone about to securely store their valuable original online games on an external hard disk drive for risk-free keeping plus fast loading. The particular x360key installs inside your Xbox 360 system or Xbox 360 Trim console and when set up there is a elegant little external OLED remote that you just link your exterior USB storage units to and can then read through the game titles on your external USB storage space to then decide on and load. Therefore no more are you going to possess heaps of video game dvd disks laying around and all your games may be filled from a USB hard drive effortlessly, there's certainly the large advantage that you'll no longer need to worry about games getting scratched or perhaps the kids dropping these which we are all aware occurs more than we would like. Addititionally there is another upside that you'll no longer be using the units DVD drive normally therefore will expand the life span of the laser inside your gaming console substantially.

The unit installation for your X360Key is gonna be the Solderless one, this is going to be an excellent factor for those that are comfortable with having things apart nevertheless haven't stepped to the next phase regarding soldering which may be a huge step even for those who are comfortable with building PC’s for instance. There's one downside currently which is that you'll desire a copy of the travel key that is perfectly located at the DVD drive of your respective gaming system, to obtain the essential out of your DVD push this usually requires special tools including the Maximus Lizard, Xtraxtor 2 and also CK3 PRO for instance, however as many people have been flashing their devices with a custom firmware they usually have this equipment and they are good together with retrieving the key away from their drives.

The particular crew is getting ready to employ a function on so it can draw out the drive important for you to then install on the MicroSD memory furnished, but there's no date on when this function is going to be applied. Besides the key extraction your x360key install should be really hassle-free, there are many video clips on YouTube regarding how to take apart your current gaming console and we are convinced the team will also have fairly thorough instructions throughout the procedure after the device is out in the crazy.

People familiar with the particular Wode Jukebox for Nintendo wii gaming console the X360Key is pretty much down the same lines, it’s the optical drive emulator, this means the unit is able to emulating the DVD travel inside your gaming console, anytime enabled your system will discover your external USB storage units linked to the unit beeing the actual DVD travel within your console communicating with the mother board. We are really big fans of this technology below because it comes we feel with much less the business of standard flashing in the Xbox 360 DVD devices which has a custom firmware. Just like the Wode Jukebox the X360Key is also running an internal Linux kernel being capable of supply this optical drive emulation, therefore in many ways it's a tiny computer on its own. This can be a great thing because it implies it will be equipped to deal with advanced up-dates to their core firmware and for unknown reasons requires a pretty challenging change to the way it functions a result of change in your Xbox 360 drive firmware as well as motherboard firmware that the folks will be able to develop a good up-date for the devices O/S that will take care of the alterations.

One more huge feature that is scheduled to be included into the X360Key with a future firmware update after release is the capability to develop legitimate back ups of your original online games on to your outside USB hard drive gadgets utilizing the Xbox 360 console by itself, yet again this is probably the most popular features of the Wode Jukebox for Nintendo wii console and will of course be a substantial feature for the X360Key also. They haven't furnished an ETA for this attribute being integrated to the firmware but we'd say it will likely be within a few months of its release. At the moment people may use the standard way of making backup copies of their original video games by using a Kreon drive.

$ony vs rest of the world?

It is real. Approximately 4 years after its launch, the PlayStation 3's much vaunted security has finally been completely and unequivocally compromised. Within weeks, if not days, PS3 users willing to pay an exorbitant premium have the choice of copying the whole set of games they own - and any they don't - onto hard drive, surely nothing stops them from spreading them over the internet. Now you ask, just how do Sony deal with the problem? Can new firmware updates keep the platform holder one step ahead of the hackers?

0

As sample "PS Samurai" hardware circulates around shops and modship suppliers worldwide, further details emerge, giving us some concept of the way the system works. From that we can extrapolate the scale of the task facing Sony mainly because it embarks on what must surely be the biggest damage limitation exercise in its recent history. This attack on PStation security contains both software and hardware. A USB dongle is connected to the P3, and pressing the eject button on the console while it cold-boots causes the code on the stick to override the console's typical launch procedure. By looking at views of the XMB noticed in the now numerous YouTube videos, the dongle appears to inject elements from debug PS3 firmware onto the retail unit. The possibility to install PKG files, available only on development and test units, now works on the retail machine. From here, the key tool to "backing up" software is added to the device.

While you might not have heard of a PKG file before, the chances are that you've installed plenty of them on your Playstation 3. Almost every sort of program you download from PSN is incorporated in the PKG container. Once downloaded, the PS3 decompresses the data and installs it onto your PS3. On development and test/reviewer units, so-called "unsigned code" is routinely distributed on disc, via download or on USB flash drives in PKG format. The only real difference between this and a regular PSN download is the fact that code is not encrypted, enabling easier distribution of unfinished or review copy games (only Sony's mastering labs can encrypt, or "sign" code). The fact that the Install PKG option now appears on a retail unit gives us a strong indication as to how the new "Jailbreak" works as it's almost certainly not present in the regular firmware. It suggests that aspects of the bespoke system updates used on the debug PS3s are being injected into the memory of the retail unit. But exactly how?

There's 2 potential explanations here. For starters, whoever is behind this is extremely clever and has isolated an exploit that allows for the injection of code over the USB port. Rather more likely is the fact that USB-based tools Sony uses to test and recover PS3s with corrupt firmware have been leaked and reverse-engineered for more nefarious ends. PlayStation 3s locked into "factory service mode" have already been popping up every now and then for a long time, and the PC-side software that runs the USB dongle was leaked a while ago.

Now it appears that the hardware has also been "liberated" from Sony's repair and test labs. This may sound somewhat implausible, but in a world where PS3 Slim photos circulate months prior to the launch and final units appear in a Philippines marketplace, anything may be possible. Besides, the exact same thing happened with the tools utilized to service the PSP right before the PSP-2000 launch in September 2007. In terms of the make-up of the dongle itself, pictures posted online of the internals show a basic USB device - what seems like an innocuous 48-pin microcontroller chip on the tiny PCB and not much else. It's quite astonishing to think that the makers are requesting a colossal $130 for such a tiny piece of tech, and it's almost certain to be reverse-engineered, ripped off and duplicated by Chinese mass-suppliers within days of showing up in market.

The software side of PS Samurai is freely available to download, installs onto a debug PS3 and throws up few surprises. It's quite a basic tool that rips off almost every file on a game disc onto the internal HDD or else onto a Usb stick or hard drive. It does appear that some of the encryption Sony uses in the files is stripped away (hashes on encrypted files change drastically), however the executable still won't work without the USB dongle in place. When selecting a game to run, the machine drops back to the XMB. From here on out, we could only speculate but it's reasonable to assume that the chip then diverts all major disc functions to the device in which the game-rip lies. As a vehicle for piracy then, all bases are covered, but is this really a "jailbreak" in the form recently sanctioned by the US courts? The mere existence of the backup manager - supposedly coded with tools stolen from Sony - indicate otherwise, and if the USB dongle is indeed cloned from the platform holder's own recovery tools, any pretence of legality is surely a joke.

The inclusion of the PKG installation option does indeed imply that the likes of emulators and media players may very well be ported and installed on to the PS3. However, right now it's most likely the case that Sony's own dev tools will be required to make any type of useful application, adding to the legality quagmire. All told, it's a nightmare scenario for Sony - but you can be fairly sure that its response will likely be swift. We can easily fully expect a mandatory firmware update to emerge from its engineering labs within days of the firm dissecting the hack, doubtless rendering it useless. Damage limitation will be the key, and just like the OtherOS removal that Geohot's exploit caused, Sony will be looking to minimise the physical number of consoles available capable of running the hack by effectively upgrading them out of contention.

Assuming the memory patch theory is true, the swiftness of the response shouldn't be an issue for Sony's engineers. Changing the make-up of the modules affected might be child's play for the platform holder and it would almost certainly necessitate a higher effort for the hackers to reverse-engineer the new code and re-patch it. Additionally, on the long term, there's nothing to stop Sony from introducing new kinds of encryption and execution in the process that future games boot.

However, the properties of the USB dongle itself are probably much harder to defend against. Assuming that the product itself comes from Sony's own servicing tools, this could call for a complete, brand new revision of motherboard to successfully defeat. The entire purpose of the dongle is to restore corrupt firmware - the chances are that it has to function on a hardware level that cannot be touched by the updater. We've seen it before on Sony kit - the so-called "Pandora" battery for PSP that flips it into service mode operates on the same principle, and was just defeated by the platform holder when it revised the handheld's motherboard. Nothing could possibly be performed to protect the present devices.

Unless Sony is competent at rewriting the most basic low-level code relating to the PS3's BIOS, there's little it can do today to defeat the USB vector of attack - it's all about preventing the injected code from working. Moving forward we can expect the usual cat and mouse game between hackers and platform holder to unfold, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that sometime soon, Sony will be able to detect users of the tool and rightfully ban them from accessing PSN, similar to the measures Microsoft continues to undertake annually against gamers who flash their DVD drives to run copied software.

The complexity of Sony's security systems suggests that it should be able to keep one step ahead, but there is nothing to stop people using the hack to prevent firmware upgrades from going down. Indeed, the chip itself is said to protect the console from executing system updates. This obviously precludes PSN access, and in the fullness of time this approach will stop newer PS3 games from running as they shall be reliant on software elements found only inside newer firmware. Considering that PS Samurai is retailing for upwards of $130, there's a really strong possibility that this may be the most expensive and short-lived hack ever made, and factoring in the simplicity of the hardware, the very high price seems almost reminiscent of a smash-and-grab raid on users intent on piracy no matter what the price. The makers of PS Samurai are charging so high price since the window of opportunity in terms of exclusivity and also the longevity of the hack itself is potentially very small.

Too Much USB by Louis Abate

Having said that, the actual properties of this USB stick and how future-proof its remain unknown. With mass-production of PS Samurai now in motion, and the first retail devices apparently set to ship before the month is up, Sony's engineers are doubtless preparing for the battle coming.

How About A Little More Lost in Shadow…

You know what really sucks? Realizing that you can’t depend on other people. Don’t worry, I’m not going all emo on you; I’m not in danger of becoming a cutter or doing myself other bodily harm, like befriending a ginger. This isn’t about some childhood friend abandoning me in an hour of need. I’m talking about the sucky realization that, for the most part, you can’t depend on other people to do what they say. Let’s take contractors, for instance. I used to think was that unless you were Tim Taylor or Wilson, and you wanted to get some work done on your home, you had two routes you could take. You could either hire each individual person to do their one specific job, or you could hire a general contractor to deal with all the headaches and hiring for you. Well, when Mrs. Mike and I decided to redo our kitchen, we hired a GenCon; more specifically, we hired one that was recommended to us and that we had met several times before. We trusted that they wouldn’t ruin our shit. We were wrong, it’s been a total pain in the ass. In fact, it’s basically at the point where if I have to talk to them much more it’s going to be all cussing and yelling and shaking and crying, so I’m forcing myself to accept shoddy half-finished work instead. It’s stupid, right? I mean, how hard is it to make sure that the tile guys who took off a backdoor in order to cut it to fit in with the new flooring didn’t somehow mess up so bad that the door won’t even open anymore? And, if you’re the tile guys who cut said door, why would you put it back like that? Did you think I wouldn’t open my back door ever again?? What I’m trying to say is, if you’re in the Atlanta area, don’t use Callaway Homes to do any work you may need done.
Alright, sorry about that. I had to vent as that’s what I’ve been dealing with since the middle of last week. I feel like I’ve aged about 10 years in that time, which means I’m now almost 40. That fact was driven home today when I discovered something called the “Misquito Ringtone”. Apparently, only young’uns can hear certain pitches and my range ends at 14khz, which is for the 49-years-old and younger crowd. I wish I could look on the bright side and say that 29 is there, but I can’t hear past the 39 and younger setting. Yeah, apparently my ears are in their 40’s. Wow, this post actually is kinda emo. If I see a ginger later I’m freaking the eff out…
Before things go full cutter mode around here, let’s have some Wii news. Nothing like 450+ words into a post before the Wii is even mentioned. Maybe I should put the Wii stuff first and ramblings second? It shall be considered… Anyway, yesterday I posted the Japanese trailer for Lost in Shadow, the Wii-exclusive game from the creator of Final Fantasy. Well, today we have more of the game, and it looks freaking beautiful. Our dear friends at IGN have a nice little direct feed gameplay video that they put up, and I’m gonna share it with you guys. Lost in Shadow is set to launch “Q3 2010″; yeah, that means it should be here some time soon. Enjoy, and stay thirsty my friends.

The “Nintendo Murdered E3″ Media Blowout Pt. 2!!!

Yeah, I know the title of this post doesn’t sound like it’s the running diary that I promised you yesterday. That’s because it isn’t. As I’m sure you can tell, this is the highly anticipated Part 2 of TheSpin’s Official Wii E3 Media Blowout aka The “Nintendo Murdered E3″ Media Blowout Pt. 2!!!
Before we get into the massive bowl of deliciousness I have planned for you today, I’ve got another new product to tell you about. While I’m still waiting to hear more about POWER A’s Pro Pack Mini, including details of perhaps trying them out for myself, those are certainly not the only new devices coming out of E3. Today I was contacted by a gentleman by the name of Tiger, whose name alone makes him my hero, about Wii2HDMI, pictured up there, from Neoya. That’s right, another device I had no clue I needed until I heard about it suddenly materializes out of thin air. E3 week is so magical…
Any way, Wii2HDMI apparently does exactly what it sounds like it does: allow you to connect your Wii to your HDMI capable TV or monitor. Don’t sleep, this doesn’t magically enable graphics on par with the HDC’s, Wii will do no greater than 480p and Neoya points this out on their FAQ, which you’ll find on the product’s page. It’s basically a dongle that fits into the Wii’s slot for the A/V cables you’re already using. The end that sticks out acts as an HDMI port. After that, it’s the exact same functionality of every HDMI cable, and the same compatibility with your Wii as the component cables you can buy for your Wii to upgrade from the composite.
I’ll be honest with you, I still use the composite cables for my Wii. This is mainly because I don’t need any other cables from Monoprice. So this is great news to me, especially since I’ve got a few extra HDMI cables collecting dust. If I manage to get my hands on Wii2HDMI you know I’ll tell you all about its glory!! If you’re impatient, you can pick one up now at Neoya.com for $39.95.
Speaking of glory, I can’t believe I didn’t put up one of the most amazing and badass trailers from E3, Donkey Kong Country Returns, so you’ll be getting that first today. After that you’re gonna get all the Samus you can handle with the new Metroid:Other M trailer. Finally, we’ll end this parade of La Familia Nintendo with a bit of Mario Sports Mix. Enjoy, and stay thirsty my friends.

BAFTA releases people's choice nominations

The UK's premier gaming awards have released the shortlist for the ceremony's one publicly voted award; rest to follow next week.
Since the British Academy of Film and Telvision Arts started honouring video games in their own ceremony in 2003, the annual gaming BAFTAs have become the top gaming awards handed out in the UK.

Will John Marston once again be riding roughshod over the competition this March?

Today the 2010 awards kicked off in earnest with the release of the shortlist for the People's Choice award, with 10 of the year's best titles offered up for public voting. While the rest of the gaming BAFTAs are decided behind closed doors, the people's choice award is decided by public voting, conducted on the BAFTA Game Award website.

This year the nominees are Call of Duty: black Ops, Dance Central, FIFA 11, Halo Reach, Heavy Rain, Limbo, Mass Effect 2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Red Dead Redemption, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The shortlist is decided on by a panel of industry experts, who choose from games released in 2010.

Call of Duty has strong form in the People's Choice award, with the franchise having taken home the award in both 2008 and 2009, through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In 2007, the award was taken by the 2007 iteration of Sports Interactive's perennial favourite Football Manager.

The rest of the nominations will be released next week, on 16 February, with the awards themselves handed out a month later on March 16. Last year's awards were dominated by Uncharted 2: Drake's Fortune, which took home five awards, but was pipped at the post to the Game of the Year award by Batman: Arkham Asylum, which also won Best Gameplay.

Ridge Racer Unbounded revving for PS3, 360, PC

Namco Bandai's flagship racer series returning to consoles after five-year absence, coming to PC for first time ever; FlatOut studio Bugbear Entertainment tapped to develop.
The Ridge Racer franchise is about to get a jump start. Namco Bandai today announced Ridge Racer Unbounded, a new installment in the series for the playstation 3, xbox 360, and PC that will take the series "in [a] whole new direction," according to the publisher.

Namco Bandai's racer hasn't appeared on consoles since 2006's Ridge Racer 7 (pictured).
With the stated goal of shaking up the entire racing genre, Unbounded will take the circuit-racing franchise onto city streets with a new emphasis on havoc and destruction. To help accomplish that objective, Namco Bandai has enlisted Bugbear Entertainment to develop the game.

Bugbear's previous work includes the FlatOut series of demolition derby racers for Empire Interactive, which featured minigames requiring the player to crash such that the car's driver would be ejected through the front windshield and into targets, such as a set of giant bowling pins. The studio also developed the PSP edition of Sega Rally Revo in 2007.

Unbounded will be the first installment in the Ridge Racer series to appear on the PC, and the first to hit consoles since the 2006 release of Ridge Racer 7, a ps3 launch title. However, the series hasn't been completely dormant in the meantime. It debuted on the iPhone in 2009 with Ridge Racer Accelerated, and Ridge Racer 3DS is expected to launch alongside Nintendo's newest handheld next month.

For more on Bugbear's racing acumen, check out GameSpot's reviews of Sega Rally Revo and FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage.

Big in Japan Jan. 24-30: The Last Story, Valkyria Chronicles 3

Mistwalker's latest wii RPG and Sega's PSP strategy sequel take top two spots as new releases dominate Japanese sales charts.
If the Wii role-playing game The Last Story really is the final game from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, at least the revered developer gets to go out on top. Tracking firm Media Create has released its Japanese sales charts for the week of January 24-30, with The Last Story in the best-seller spot for its debut week.

The Last Story may yet serve as a happy ending for Sakaguchi's career.
The Last Story sold 114,722 copies in its first week on sale, leading a flood of new releases that claimed seven of the top 10 spots on the charts. Sega's PSP strategy RPG Valkyria Chronicles III was a relatively close second, selling 102,779 copies for the week. Other notable new releases in the top 10 included the latest Kenka Banchou title from Spike (fourth place with 58,977 sold) and the Japanese debut of BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins for the ps3 (sixth place with 42,854 sold).

As might be expected, the three titles that retained a spot in the top 10 were the three best sellers from the week prior. Former sales champ Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (Final Mix) slipped all the way to ninth place, selling 20,528, while the previous week's third place finisher, Donkey Kong Country, rounded out the top 10 with 19,214 sold. The January 17-23 runner-up, Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3, showed the most staying power of the group, finishing the week in seventh place with 33,338 sold.

On the hardware front, the pecking order remained the same. Sony's PSP led the pack once again with 34,648 sold, followed by the PS3, which managed to move 25,149 new systems into Japanese gamers' homes. Although the Wii remained in third place, it did see a notable uptick in sales, with 19,448 sold compared to 14,547 the week prior.

Aava Mobile reportedly set to reveal Medfield-based Android / MeeGo phone at MWC

Eager for a way to forget about Moorestown? We wouldn't be shocked if Intel was in the same camp, and if this here rumor pans out, it could be Medfield acting as the amnesia at Mobile World Congress. If you'll recall, Intel briefly showed off a Medfield-based phone late last month, and now we're hearing that Aava Mobile -- the same company responsible for a WoW-crunching Moorestown demonstration at Computex -- is poised to release a real stunner in Barcelona. Slashgear has it on good authority that Aava's second-generation Core design will be officially rolled out in a matter of days, complete with Intel Inside, an 8.9mm-thick chassis, Android and MeeGo. You read correctly -- both mobile operating systems will be supported. It's said that Aava doesn't actually plan on hawking these to consumers; instead, they'll be shuttled off to developers in order to promote its integrated ACPU and modem platform. Hard to say if the shell we'll (hopefully) see at MWC will remain final, but you can bet we'll be digging for more once the show floor opens.Aava Mobile reportedly set to reveal Medfield-based Android / MeeGo phone at MWC originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 15:34:00 EDT. Bulletstorm pokes fun at Call of Duty

Epic Games releases free game parody of Activision's popular military first-person shooter to promote its own take on the genre.

Call of Duty may be a blockbuster success on a global scale, but Activision's cash cow isn't quite bulletproof. For example, Epic Games is taking shots at the franchise with Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm, a free downloadable game parody that mocks the military first-person shooter and a number of its gameplay conventions.

The difference between Duty Calls and its inspiration becomes apparent as soon as players start the game. Upon being dropped into a level, a voice gives the player marching orders over the radio.

Look familiar?
"Here's your objective," the commanding officer says. "Blah blah blah blah secret base. Blah blah blah blah plan. Blah blah blah nuclear missile bomb. Blah blah blah counting on you. Utmost importance. Win. Good luck."

As players make their way through the game, they find useless objects (a stick, loose leaf paper), run into villains who can be beaten only in slow motion, and achieve the rank of Sergeant of the Master Sergeants Most Important Person of Extreme Sergeants to the Max. The game isn't exactly subtle about its critiques, as every one of the player's gunshots is accompanied by a voice clip loudly saying, "Boring!"

Although the game's parody is pretty apparent, its purpose--promoting Epic's upcoming shooter Bulletstorm--is less overt. Up front, the biggest clues at the tie are the game's subtitle and a plug for Bulletstorm in the description section of a YouTube video on the official site. A short commercial for Bulletstorm also runs at the completion of Duty Calls, which can be finished in about five minutes.

Developed by Epic subsidiary People Can Fly, Bulletstorm is a first-person shooter built around a skillshot system that rewards players for dispatching enemies in creative and often gory ways. The game is set to launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 22. For more on Bulletstorm, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Why the camera isn't the culprit for the white iPhone 4's delay (update: Woz responds)

Unless you've been away from the Internet over the last few days, you would've no doubt heard about Woz's special appearance at the Engadget Show on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, a few websites ran with some quotes that they pulled from our interview -- specifically, the highlight was Woz "confirming" that the white iPhone 4 was indeed delayed due to camera issues. Well, I don't think this is the case at all. In fact, I'm sure there are plenty of other good reasons for why Apple's been delaying the much anticipated flavor of its flagship smartphone, but the camera just isn't one of them. Head right past the break and all will be explained.

Update: Our man Woz has just responded in the comments:

I said plenty to make it clear that I know nothing of Apple's reasons for rejecting anything ever. I told how when I got my white iPhone 4 assembled I tested the flash photos and they did indeed have problems. I spoke of testing flash photos versus non-flash ones and comparing flash photos between my white and black iPhones. I don't recall saying that it was a 'reason' Apple rejected the parts although I had read that.
For the last part, we were referring to 0:55 in the interview video after the break, but now that Woz has spoken, it could've been a joke at the time that got misinterpreted by some websites. They tend to do that with Woz. Read on!Continue reading Why the camera isn't the culprit for the white iPhone 4's delay (update: Woz responds)Why the camera isn't the culprit for the white iPhone 4's delay (update: Woz responds) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 17:20:00 EDT. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 gets limited Fight Stick

Mad Catz announces $160 PS3 and Xbox 360 joystick to be limited to 5,000 numbered units; release expected in time for game's February 15 launch.

After a decade-long cease-fire, Marvel and Capcom are set to renew their storied fighting game rivalry in two weeks with the launch of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. To commemorate the return to hostilities between the two companies, Mad Catz will release a limited edition Marvel vs. Capcom 3-branded version of its arcade-style joysticks.

The Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Arcade Fight Stick Tournament Edition will be limited to 5,000 individually numbered joysticks and is expected to begin shipping out to customers by the time the game launches February 15. Like the Tournament Edition joysticks Mad Catz produced for Street Fighter IV, the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 controller will feature a stick and buttons from arcade manufacturer Sanwa Denshi, turbo functionality, and a storage compartment for the controller cord when not in use. Mad Catz has indicated the stick will be available to order through its own online store, though there's no product page for it as of press time.

Want to take it for a ride?
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will launch with a roster of 36 playable characters split evenly between the two companies. The comics company will be represented by characters like Spider-Man, Captain America, MODOK, and Deadpool, while gaming favorites like Ryu, Dante, Amaterasu, and Wesker will fly the Capcom flag. In addition to the standard arcade and online versus modes, the game will feature technique challenges for each character and issue players a "license card" that will reflect their particular play styles.

Microsoft game division revs rise 55%

[UPDATE] Kinect helps Entertainment and Devices Division rack up $3.7 billion in quarterly sales; quarterly xbox 360 sales up 21%, Xbox Live membership up 30%.
While Sony and Nintendo are drawing attention with news of their next handheld systems, Microsoft is celebrating the success of its console efforts.

Today, Microsoft reported its earnings for the quarter ending December 31, 2010. Overall, the company did well, posting a profit of $6.63 billion on earnings of $19.95 billion. Specifically, the company's game department, the Entertainment and Devices Division, did very well, reporting $3.7 billion in quarterly sales--an increase of 55 percent over the prior year's three-month total of $2.38 billion. Operating income for the department was $679 million, up from $365 million the year prior.

Kinect helped Microsoft's game division increase its revenues 55 percent.

One big reason for the Entertainment and Devices Division's success was the introduction of the Kinect during the holiday quarter. The system shipped 8 million units in the two months after it went on sale November 4, 3 million more units than Microsoft had forecast. The Kinect also helped boost xbox 360 sales 21 percent during the quarter, with
1.9 million units of the console sold in December alone in the US. In 2010, domestic Xbox 360 sales increased 42 percent to 6.8 million units sold.

Xbox Live subscriptions also increased 30 percent during the October-December quarter. At the
2011 Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that the service now boasts 30 million registered users, a new record. Also during his presentation, he pegged the worldwide Xbox 360 installed base at 50 million units.

The Entertainment and Devices Division also includes windows Phone 7, which sold
1.5 million units in six weeks, according to Microsoft. The phone, which has features that connect with Xbox Live, is now available on nine devices in 30 countries via 60 operators. More than 100 applications are being added to its marketplace each day according to Microsoft.

[UPDATE] In a conference call with investors, Microsoft executives said they expected the Entertainment and Devices Division's current-quarter revenue to increase 50 percent. For the full fiscal year, the company expects the division's revenue to be up 40 percent. Once again, the popularity of the Kinect and Xbox 360 were cited as factors for the uptick.

IDC: ZTE takes fourth in global cellphone rankings, leapfrogs Apple and knocks RIM out of top 5

You like numbers? Good, because it's the season and amid all these lovely financial reports we've been hitting there are some broader trends to look at. IDC has released its mobile phone report for 2010 and has concluded that, worldwide, the industry grew 18.5 percent over 2009, shipping a massive 1.39 billion units. That's nice and all, but check out this bit about ZTE. The manufacturer boosted its annual shipments by 94 percent, stealing Apple's recently-won fourth place position globally and, in doing so, knocking RIM straight into the dreaded "others" category. Can RIM make it back? Will Apple recover? Will Siobhan and Lucky ever reconcile their differences? PCs to get Kinect 'in a formal way' - Microsoft CEO

CES 2011: Steve Ballmer tells BBC that motion-sensing system will make its way to windows systems...eventually.
At his
2011 Consumer Electronics Show keynote address, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made much of the Kinect, the xbox 360's motion-sensing system. The camera-based, controller-free peripheral shipped 8 million units last year, 3 million more than the 5 million units the company expected it to.

Kinect: Coming to the PC’eventually.

With the kinect already a hit on the Xbox 360, many people are wondering if the add-on will ever be released for Microsoft's omnipresent product, Windows. Speaking with the
BBC, Ballmer appeared to confirm that a PC-compatible Kinect will indeed be released--eventually, anyway.

When asked "Will you be able to plug a Kinect into a PC?" by the interviewer, Ballmer answered thusly: "We'll support that in a formal way in the right time, and when we have an announcement to make, we'll make it."

Microsoft isn't the only one bringing Kinect technology to PCs. There are currently numerous research projects that have created open-source Windows drivers for the Kinect, leading to such experimental creations as a Kinect-based mini-copter and a Roomba-like robot. Also, earlier this week, Primesense, one of the companies behind Kinect tech, announced it was working on a similar motion-sensing system for the PC. Called WAVI Xtion, the system is being manufactured by PC maker Asus and will be available in the second quarter of this year.

Dell Alienware M17x and Aurora hands-on

It's true, Dell unleashed two new Alienware systems this morning, and naturally we just had to check out the two epically powerful rigs in person. We spent the most time with the new 17-inch M17x, and while the chassis has been updated, it's still loaded with lots of LEDs, a trippy color-changing backlit keyboard, and chrome accents. The lid and edges have been given a more chiseled aesthetic, so we'd say it looks more muscular than ever. Obviously, the big story with the M17x is that it is now 3D capable. The full HD display is seriously beautiful, and while we didn't get to check out a Blu-ray 3D movie on the rig, we can only imagine how breathtaking the experience is going to be. We did, however, get to check out its new integrated 1080p streaming capability, which actually is based on an integrated WHDI solution. You'll need to pick up an extra box and hook it up to your TV, but in the demo we saw there was absolutely no lag between the clip of Final Fantasy on the laptop and on the TV. The unit we saw hanging around was packing a new Core i7 CPU and NVIDIA graphics, but it will apparently be available with AMD's latest graphics as well.

We also caught sometime with the new Aurora desktop, but like we said it wasn't much. The tower is still crazily-lit, but has been updated with the most powerful overclockable Intel Core i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge processors as well as new NVIDIA graphics that support 3D Vision. The Aurora should be available this month for a starting price of $1,799 and the M17x for $1,499 on January 10th. NEWS: Nintendo 3DS Potentially Hazardous for Children

Prolongued 3D play might affect vision in young children.
Nintendo advised that children under the age of 6 shouldn't play the 3DS using its 3D settings as they confirmed the lineup of games for Nintendo World 2011, an event in Japan from January 8 to 10 where the 3DS will be playable by the public for the first time.Since 3D causes more eye strain and fatigue and  might affect vision development in children, Nintendo is advising for kids under that age to not play it. The warning doesn't just apply to the 3DS, though. This is a general warning towards 3D entertainment, including movies, due to potential negative effects of 3D, such as motion sickness.
